3D Ultrasounds and When to Get Them

Fetal Photos by Cara • Sep 01, 2022

An ultrasound or a sonogram is a kind of prenatal test that pregnant women take.

By using overlapping sound waves, an ultrasound machine creates a 2D image of the fetus in the womb. But there’s also a way to get a much clearer image of your little one...through an elective 3D ultrasound!

Why Do Parents-to-Be Get 3D Ultrasounds?

A 3D ultrasound works by taking thousands of photos in quick succession. It creates an image

that is nearly as distinct as a photograph. Parents-to-be often opt for 3D ultrasounds to receive

keepsake images of their baby. It is the first time they get to see their baby’s face clearly—they

get to see whether the baby has the mother’s nose or the father’s smile. It is a very intimate and

emotional experience. Not only are you connecting with the baby, but also with those who come

to the appointment with you.

What Is the Right Time to Get a 3D Ultrasound?

The thing about a 3D ultrasound is that it isn’t a medical must. It is completely optional, but if

you choose to get it done, there are some things you need to know. Since a 3D ultrasound

creates a photograph, you have to wait until your baby is developed enough to take a

photograph. For this reason, it is best if you get 3D ultrasounds of your baby done between 26

and 32 weeks of your pregnancy. That’s when you’ll get the clearest look at your baby.

Some mothers opt to have multiple 3D ultrasound sessions, so they can have images of their

little one at different stages. If you receive a 3D ultrasound between 15-26 weeks in your

pregnancy, your baby’s facial details won’t be as developed, and they will seem a little thinner.

However, there is often more movement, and you can see more of them on the screen.

If you get a 3D ultrasound after the 26 week point, your baby’s face will appear chubbier and

much more detailed. Because your baby is much larger at this point, their whole body won’t fit

on the screen — so the image will focus on their face.

Pro Tip: Drink Plenty of Water!

If you want to get the best 3D ultrasound images, make sure to start drinking plenty of water a

couple of weeks before your appointment. When you are properly hydrated, the amniotic fluid

becomes clearer, allowing you to get a closer look at your little one in the ultrasound images.
